Welcome to the Pevensey Bay to Eastbourne Coastal Management Scheme

Here you will find information about our approach to managing the 15km stretch of coastline between Holywell in Eastbourne and Cooden Beach in Pevensey Bay over the next 100 years.

Reducing coastal flood and erosion risk to properties and infrastructure in the scheme area requires action. The task is complex and we have big ambitions to match.

Alongside making the area more resilient to coastal flooding, we want to deliver interventions that will benefit the wider community and environment.

We are working with a wide range of organisations as well as local communities as we recognise that better outcomes can be achieved by working together.

 SHORT-TERM (INTERIM) PROJECT 2025-2027

From June 2025 beach management in Pevensey Bay will be returning to the Environment Agency with operational activities being carried out by the new contractor VolkerStevin. The activities will be similar to the way Pevensey Coastal Defence Limited (PCDL) currently carry them out and will protect local homes and businesses from flooding. Meaning you should see little difference in shingle reprofiling, recycling, bypassing and recharge activities along the coastline.

We are working closely with PCDL to ensure the experience they have gained maintaining 9km of beach frontage in Pevensey Bay over the last 25 years is transferred.

The beach management will be led by a new Beach Manager, Paul Levitt. Paul will provide regular updates to residents, especially those that live along the beach frontage who are directly affected by our activities.

To understand how this could work best, we have created a short survey where you can submit your communication preferences and provide us with your contact details.
